Dr. Phillips's Classes - 1/9/12 to 1/13/12

Rhetoric II

We will continue our review of the basic elements of rhetoric and the types of proof. We will also work to form a functioning definition of rhetoric, applied to both speaking and writing.

Students will turn in their thesis topics on Wednesday, January 11th.

Antiquities

In Antiquities, we will continue our discussion of the dialogues of Socrates and life in two specific city-states: Athens and Sparta.

Students will continue reading The Trial and Death of Socrates by the schedule below.

Modernity

The Modernity class will continue our discussion of Karl Marx, specifically articulated in The Communist Manifesto. We will also try to move on to the reactionary movements against communism and corporatism – the Romantics, agrarianism, and distributism.

Students will complete their timeline presentations and will continue reading The Communist Manifesto by the schedule below.

· Monday – Communist Manifesto, pgs. 245-258

· Wednesday – Jekyll & Hyde, pgs. 5-28

Christendom

The Christendom class will discuss Macbeth (students have just completed their reading) and move on to events that led to the Crusades.

Students will continue reading The Story of King Arthur and His Knights by the schedule below.

· Monday – King Arthur, pgs. 9-28

· Wednesday – King Arthur, pgs. 29-64

U.S. History

In U.S. History, we will continue our discussion of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. We will also attempt to move on to the War of 1812 and the Panic of 1819.

Students will read from The Patriot’s Handbook by the schedule below.
